Taylor and Devin's story

Hello, my name is Taylor and my daughter Devin Everly was born 6.6lbs and 18” long - the best day of our lives ❤️

When she was about 3 weeks old we started noticing what looked like a scratch or some kind of mark on her face. It started to get worse after about a week. My husband started doing research and said it looks like a hemangioma.

We took her to the pediatrician to make sure it wasn't anything more serious, like a rash or infection, etc... We had never heard of or seen a hemangioma before, and I was so upset because it is right on her perfect face and was only going to get worse before it got better.

Our pediatrician was THE WORST, we had researched a drug called "Timolol" and asked her about it. She said "no, there is no medication and no cure and it will only get bigger until shes about 3 and it will never go away".

My husband decided to take matters into his own hands, and scheduled an appointment with a pediatric dermatologist with excellent reviews. She was shocked that a pediatrician would ever suggest that we don't treat the hemangioma, due to it being on her face. She noted that the skin will continue stretching and the face is a very sensitive area. Even once it goes away on its own it will leave permanent damage to the area. She noted this wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't right on her face.

She immediately prescribed us Timolol (a topical gel) and said to start right away. The sooner the better with hemangiomas. She said.

In just 3.5 weeks we have noticed a huge difference! She said it is possible that we will need to use laser treatments after the area flattens out, but that there's a chance the issue resolves on its own. The laser treatment would run 300-400 per treatment, and the Timilol is covered under our insurance, which brings the cost down to 10 dollars (from 200).

She is confident it will be gone before our daughter's first birthday. She is now 4 months old 🙂

We have our last appointment with our pediatrician next week, I only kept it because I can't wait to show her the progress and to educate her on hemangiomas .

The cheetah print outfit was the day before we started treatment and the other one after treatment.

These unique birthmarks draw attention but we’ve only had one bad experience with someone being ugly about it and my husband nipped that in the bud immediately. Most people have no idea what a hemangioma is, and are too timid to ask.

I encourage people to ask questions: knowledge is power and the more you know, the more you can encourage and support others.

We’re in this together Mommas!
